Why is the Russian migration card essential?

A mandatory formality

When you enter Russia, the migration card is issued by the authorities at the border post :

• The entry stamp is stamped on the passport and on the migration card at the bottom left (+ on the eVisa if applicable).

• All hotels will make a copy of your passport, visa and migration card which they will use to register you with the local authorities.

In case of loss or damage

In the event of loss or damage, you must report the incident to the police as quickly as possible. Without this card, it is impossible to leave the territory of Russia legally.

How to obtain and fill out the migration card?

Obtaining process

The migration card is automatically generated and filled up by a border agent on a computer. Unlike what was done a few years ago, it is no longer given blank to fill in yourself with a pen.

It’s a simple little white sheet divided in two with the same information on each part. One is given to you, the other is kept by the border agent.

Tips for storing your card

• Keep a copy or a photo of your card on your phone, it will come in handy in case you loose it.

• Practical tip : Slip your migration card inside the protective sleeve of your passport (mine is see-through). The size of the migration card is the same as the passport, so it fits easily and will be always be quickly accessible.

My experience : extra tips

Always check : Make sure the border agent puts the entry stamp on the passport (and eVisa if applicable) as well as on the migration card.

Do not loose it : Keep your card with your passport to avoid forgetting/loosing it. Hotels always scan the migration card together with the passport and visa. Make sure your card is returned to you after the check-in registration (some receptionists forget!).

• The migration card is in English and Russian
. Your names will be indicated in Russian as on your visa.

• It says “Republic of Belarus” on the migration card but that does not mean that you can cross the Russia – Belarus border. Please note, there are no border posts between the 2 countries following an agreement. Third-country nationals cannot cross this invisible border between the two countries.
