KARACHAY – CHERKESSIA
Karachay-Cherkessia, a hiker’s paradise in the North Caucasus.
Nestled in the North Caucasus, Karachay-Cherkessia is a republic where Karachay and Circassian traditions meet, two mountain peoples with rich cultural heritage. The Karachays are Turkic people living mainly in the mountains, while the Circassians reside in the lowlands. The republic is also home to Russians, Nogais, and Abazins.
The region is best known for Dombay and Arkhyz, two mountain resorts famous for hiking, skiing, and astronomy, thanks to one of Russia’s largest observatories. Its capital, Cherkessk, though modest, remains the administrative and cultural hub of the area, reflecting both Caucasian and Russian influences.
Popular among Russian tourists, the Karachay-Cherkess Republic (КЧР (K-Tch-R), as it is often spelled in Russian) is a hidden gem for foreigners: endless hiking opportunities, local traditions, and breathtaking panoramas await!
