1. Königsberg Cathedral and Kant’s Island
Kaliningrad’s cathedral, on the island of Kant, is THE symbol of the city. Before 1945, the island was the fully built Kneiphof district connected by the famous 7 bridges of Königsberg.
Today, the reconstructed cathedral houses the tomb of philosopher Immanuel Kant and Russia’s largest organ complex.
Practical tips :
• Recommended visit : Instead of paying entrance to the cathedral, I advise you to attend an organ concert at the end of the day for a unique experience.
• Price : Access to Kant’s island is free, from 300₽ for the cathedral and 600₽ for a 45-minute organ concert.
• Where to buy a ticket : On site in front of the cathedral at the Kacca/ticket office or online at Sobor39 with a Russian bank card.
2. The amber museum
Kaliningrad is known in Russia as the “Yantarny Krai“, literally meaning “the amber region” since it is home to the largest amber reserve in the world. The amber museum is located in the Dohna Tower, a former 19th century fortification, where you can find ancient jewelry and other exceptional works of art.
Fun fact : The Amber Room of Catherine’s Palace in Tsarskoye Selo was given in the 18th century by the Prussian King Frederick William I to the Russian Tsar Peter the Great and was stolen by the Germans in 1941 who moved it to Königsberg. It is now considered lost, some believe that it was destroyed by a fire in 1945 (amber is not a mineral), and others believe that it is still hidden in the underground passages of the the former Teutonic castle of Königberg.
• Opening hours and price : Open every day from 10AM to 6PM; 250₽
• Museum’s website
3. The “fishing village”
The “Rybnaya Derevnya” is a recent tourist complex with historic Prussian architecture located in the old Lomse district right next to the cathedral, along the Pregolia river (Pregel in German).
There are many restaurants, souvenir shops and the tourist information center which by the way has very knowledgeable staff.
Tip : Go for a walk there early in the morning when there is no one yet, during the day it is packed with tourists.
4. The Friedland Gate
The Friedland Gate, built in 1862, was part of the defensive structures of Königsberg in the 19th century. The date of its construction is engraved on the keystone of its main arch. It served as a strategic passage for the road connecting Königsberg to the town of Friedland, today Pravdinsk.
It is one of the seven gates still standing which bear witness to the city’s Prussian past. Now transformed into a museum, the Friedland Gate offers exhibitions on military history, defensive tactics and equipment of that time.
• Opening hours and price : Open daily from 10:30AM to 6PM; 400₽
• A small virtual tour is available on the official website to get an overview of the museum
5. The World Ocean museum
It is in fact a museum complex which with the main building brings together around ten museums such as the Soviet oceanographic ship Vityaz, the oceanographic ship Kosmonavt Viktor Patsayev of the Soviet maritime space fleet, the submarine B-413, and the “Planet Ocean” (in construction) in the city of Kaliningrad (along the Pregolia river, in the historic center) but also the Prussian lighthouse of Zalivino and the exhibition center maritime in Svetlogorsk.
You can buy a separate ticket for each museum but also a “complete” ticket for 8 different sites.
• Price : from 300₽ or 1800₽ for the “full” ticket valid for 7 days
• Sleeping on board of the Vityaz : You can rent a cabin on board the Soviet ship from 2000₽/night. Each cabin bears the name of a writer such as Alexandre Grin or Jules Vernes.
• Official website

6. The Amalienau district
Amalienau is the district you must visit to get a feel of the Prussian past of Kaliningrad. Designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is a preserved district of Kaliningrad, spared from bombing. Amalienau was developed as a residential area for the Königsberg bourgeoisie so to speak, it is distinguished by its villas, its circular squares and its small streets which never cross at right angles.
The villas, built mainly between 1900 and 1914, bear the signature of famous architects such as Friedrich Heitmann and Erich Mendelsohn, each villa is unique and some even have a pointed roof typical of Prussian architecture.
• Break : Stop for a coffee at the coffee shop Gustav Grossmann in the heart of Amalienau, in the former Gustav Grossmann grocery store. You can visit a typical Prussian museum apartment from the beginning of the 20th century.
• Tip : I recommend you to follow the audio-guided itinerary on the Izi.Travel app.
7. The Bunker museum
The museum is located in a German bunker, built in early 1945, at a depth of 7 meters. This bunker served as a bomb shelter for the headquarters of the German high command at the time.
The main exhibition is dedicated to the assault on Königsberg by the Red Army, which took place from 6 to 9th of April 1945, the day before the Soviets captured the city.
• Opening hours and price : Open daily from 10AM to 6PM; from 300₽
8. The Royal Gate
Built between 1843 and 1850, the Royal Gate was part of the fortifications of Königsberg. It is decorated with restored high reliefs depicting King Frederick I of Prussia, Duke Albrecht and King Přemysl Otakar.
Formerly the main passage for dignitaries, it now houses the historic and cultural center of The Great Embassy, the diplomatic trip of Peter the Great to Western Europe.
If you have little time in Kaliningrad, I advise you to only visit this gate rather than the others.
• Opening hours and price : open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11AM to 7PM; 300₽
• Official website
9. Victory Square
Victory Square, Podeby Ploshad is the modern city center of Kaliningrad which until 1945 was called the Adolf Hitler Platz. Dominated by the obelisk and the imposing Cathedral of Christ the Savior built in 2006.
There are all kinds of shops, restaurants and cafés around. If you walk on the right side of the cathedral, there is a small craft market where souvenirs are sold.
10. The Marzipan museum at the Brandenburg Gate
Two experiences in one visit. The small museum dedicated to the famous “Königsberg marzipan”, an 18th century sweet specialty of the region, is nestled inside the Brandenburg Gate, one of the historical gates of Kaliningrad. This unique place combines architectural heritage and food traditions.
The Brandenburg Gate is the only one of the old gates of Königsberg still used for transport purposes, but the tram has not passed through it for several years.
• Opening hours and price : open daily from 10AM to 9PM; free entry; there is of course a shop on site.
